Duke assistant coach Amile Jefferson is heading to the Boston Celtics in the same role

A three-time captain while at Duke, he will join the staff of Joe Mazzulla and coach his former college teammate, Jayson Tatum, who was a freshman in Jefferson’s senior season.

Jefferson played for Duke from 2012-17 and was a member of the Blue Devils’ national championship team in 2015. He was named Duke’s director of player development in 2021, and coach Jon Scheyer promoted him to assistant coach for the 2022-23 season.

“Amile is a rising star in the coaching profession and I’m so excited and proud of him for earning this opportunity with one of the NBA’s iconic franchises,” Scheyer said in a news release Thursday. “The Celtics are getting a winner — one of the hardest working, most passionate, positive and dedicated people I know. He is a tremendous teacher of the game and his ability to connect with players is innate.

Jefferson, 30, had a brief NBA career, appearing in 30 games with the Orlando Magic (2018-20). He scored 42 total points.
